The Science of PEMF Therapy

An Introduction to Integrative Bodywork

Integrative Bodywork is the basis for a holistic approach to healing physical dysfunction.  It implies the combination of one or more modalities to create a framework that assists the entire body system rather than focusing on a specific symptom. A holistic approach to rehabilitative therapy examines the root cause of the problem, addressing it at the core, while also addressing and alleviating the symptoms of the problem.

An integrative approach means looking at all aspects that may affect the individual, including:  diet, exercise, mental activity, sleep patterns, traumas, etc.  These and other external factors play a role in one’s overall health.  Bringing all of these factors into balance for the individual is what is meant by integrative bodywork.

In recent years, scientific breakthroughs combined with the re-discovery of ancient knowledge have created an exciting new frontier for therapeutic healing.  We know that certain conditions in our body either help or hinder proper metabolic processes.  For example, balancing the pH of our cells will allow the proper exchange of cellular material at its most efficient functioning.

In most cases, balancing the body’s pH can be as simple as modifying the diet to decrease acidic foods and increase alkaline foods.  A factor in establishing a balanced pH is proper oxygenation.  When oxygen levels are depleted, cells begin to clump together and create blockages at stress points throughout the body’s interstitial system.  Poor oxygenation is the result of environmental toxins, smoking, hazardous materials and other factors.

The Science of PEMF Therapy

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field, and its purpose is to promote optimal cellular function and increase oxygenation.  PEMF Therapy stimulates and exercises cells, helping to resolve cellular dysfunction and support overall wellness.  PEMF Therapy treats your cells like batteries.  Throughout the day, they are slowly drained of energy, resulting in your body and mind feeling tired or depleted.  PEMF Therapy helps by amplifying your natural energy and encouraging your body to function efficiently on a cellular level.

The energy waves from the pulsating electromagnetic field of the PEMF machine work with your body’s natural magnetic field.  The increase in electrolytes and ions naturally influences molecular changes in cellular metabolism, supporting healthy cellular function.  This works with your body’s own recovery process, assisting in the relief of chronic pain and inflammation.

Ultimately, humans require electricity to send signals throughout the body and into the brain.  PEMF is shown to effectively realign the electricity in individual cells.  When a cell is stimulated, it allows positive charges to enter a cell in an open ion channel.  This can positively influence movement, healing and the sending of signals.  Disruptions  in electrical currents can lead to dysfunction or illness.  PEMF therapy helps to correct the disruption in the electrical current returning it to the normal state, in turn promoting overall wellness.

Benefits of PEMF Therapy

Enhancing the body’s natural recovery process

Correcting cellular dysfunction throughout the body

Stimulating and exercising cells, recharging them

Providing more energy naturally

Reduction of inflammation and pain

Facilitating shorter recovery time from injury

Additional Information and Side Effects

Electromagnetic Fields affect the charge of the cell membrane, relaxing it so the membrane channels are able to open.  These channels are like the doors and windows of a house - by opening them, oxygen and nutrients are able to enter the cell easier.  At the same time, CO2 and waste are more easily removed from the cell, resulting in optimal cell function.

Your body’s response to the first session may (or may not) cause you to experience mild side effects including:  nausea, lethargy, headaches, fatigue and muscle aches due to the exiting of toxins from the body.  These effects are similar to that of a deep-tissue massage due to the increased circulation.  Side effects are generally short-lived.

Preventing a Strong Detox Reaction

Taking a slower approach to the treatment regimen will help to decrease the detox reaction.

If you are having an uncomfortable reaction, stop the session and allow symptoms to clear.  Try a shorter session time and use normal personal procedures for detoxification.  Seaweed (kelp) and alfalfa are helpful - follow an alkaline diet, avoid sugars, alcohol and heavy animal products.

Improvement and Healing with PEMF

Having proper expectations is important.  To set realistic expectations, we must first understand the nature of the problem, the depth of the damage or dysfunction, the types of tissue involved and their respective regeneration potential, and the age of the person.

In some cases, people don’t notice a huge improvement day by day, but when looking back over a week or month, one will notice significant improvement.  If the PEMF is not likely to reverse the dysfunction, it can stall or slow the progression of a diseased state.  For tissue that does not have regenerative capacities, it is still valuable in reducing pain, swelling, improving circulation, and stimulating whatever regeneration is possible.

What PEMF Therapy can treat:

Cellular communication begins with signal impulse and ends with a change in cellular behavior.  When cellular change is destructive, the condition becomes chronic and re-establishing normal cellular communication is the only way to combat the dysfunction.

Pain and inflammation are the two most commonly treated conditions with PEMF.  Both can be either acute or chronic.  Acute pain and inflammation in a reasonably healthy body will likely care for itself, but through PEMF we can streamline the process and speed up healing.

Our PEMF Machine is the HUGO

The HUGO is a high intensity, nanosecond, spark gap PEMF machine.  Engineered to restore and optimize the body’s natural healing system.  You will feel the pulsation happening as the true pulse electromagnetic field reaches out and relieves every area of inflammation.  The HUGO PEMF is shown to be completely safe apart from certain contraindications.

Contraindications

High intensity PEMF is not recommended for people with the following conditions:

Pregnancy

Organ Transplant recipients - due to enhancing immune functions

Bleeding Disorders

Those with non-MRI safe IUDs

Those with Pacemakers

Hearing Aids or other electronic implant devices

Epileptic Conditions

Cautions

PEMF should be used with caution in those with:

Stents

Metal Staples

Metal Ports

Metal Prosthetics (ex:  dental implants/ joint replacements)

Breast implants - it is not recommended to use at more than 50% intensity over implants                                        for 24 minutes at a time

All jewelry and belts must be removed before using the machine (all metal) from person.

All electronic devices (computer, keys, phone, etc.) should be 10 ft. away from machine while it is in operation as the magnetic action will damage electronic components.

A Brief History of Magnetic Therapy

“An important scientific innovation rarely makes its way by gradually winning over and converting its opponents:  it rarely happens that Saul becomes Paul.  What does happen is that its opponents gradually die out, and that the growing generation is familiarized with the ideas from the beginning.” - Max Planck, German physicist

People have used magnets for general or therapeutic purposes for thousands of years, with evidence dating as early as 1000 B.C. Both Hindu and Chinese medicine used lodestones in ancient medical practices, in conjunction with the energy meridians used in acupuncture techniques.  They concluded that as magnets have influence over other materials, they also contain positive benefits to the human body’s electrical system.

Throughout the Middle Ages, several scientists experimented with magnets, but no real clinical evidence was gathered until the late 19th century and early 20th century.  In 1842, Stokes (Stokes Adam Syndrome) and Bell (Bell’s Palsy) treated a patient presenting shoulder pain with a 20 lb. magnet.  The patient reported relief and restoration.  In the early 20th century, Dr. Otto Warburg’s research was contemporary with British researchers developing RIFE technology, the predecessor to current PEMF technology.

Magnetic therapy was first used in the United States to treat bone fractures.  It was found to increase the rate of healing and reduce the chance of unsuccessful unions.  Magnetic therapy was found to increase vasodilation, indicating enhanced circulation and greater oxygenation.   The HUGO PEMF is the evolution of this technology, designed to assist in optimal cellular function.
